One of sixteen districts covering the state of Saxony, it is coterminous with the Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge district.〔( Constituency boundaries ), bundeswahlleiter.de, accessed 1 September 2013〕 The constituency elects one representative under the mixed member proportional representation (MMP) system. Under the current constituency numbering system, it is designated as constituency 158. The constituency was created for the 2002 election as ''Sächsische Schweiz – Weißeritzkreis'', assuming its current name for the 2009 election, following a local government reform. Most of the constituency had previously been part of the Pirna – Sebnitz – Bischofswerda constituency.
